Frequently Asked Questions About Decluttering & Organizing
"I am extremely pleased and grateful for the excellent job that Kelly has done in decluttering and organizing my pantry and laundry room. In a matter of a few hours Kelly was able to accomplish something that I never would have been able to do. I highly recommend her." - Lynda P.
Why should I get organized?
"Outer order leads to inner peace" - Gretchen Rubin
first & foremost...it is important to me that you know there's absolutely no shame in not knowing how to get organized and/or stay organized. Decluttering and organizing are not easy tasks, and they're not skills many of us are taught growing up. Peoples' spaces can get disorganized, messy, or become collection of things due to number of life issues. Lack of time, emotional strains, physical ability, mental health, or just not knowing where to start. As soon as you recognize the signs of disorganization and are willing to ask for help, then you're taking the first important step.
You're probably on this page to learn what it takes to get organized and you're looking for answers to questions you have about the process. The good news is that there are expert organizers who truly understand and can help you. Just know that there's never any judgement from me and all of our sessions are confidential.
There are variety of reasons to get organized, but the main reasons are disorganization leads to higher levels of stress, depression, bad spending habits, and reduced productivity. In some homes, it may cause arguments and create resentment with a loved one. Also, think of all the valuable time you've wasted looking for things you need in your every day life. For example, you purchase the same kitchen spices or phone chargers over and over again because you didn't know you already had them or you simply couldn't find them? Organization helps us get tasks done faster, more efficiently, spend less money, and have more time to relax & enjoy our free time. Saving time, money, brainpower, energy, feeling mentally healthier, and being more focused, are all great reasons to get organized and have order in your life.
Do you have a problem area to tackle such as a pantry, a closet, or a garage? Did you have life circumstances that caused disorganization throughout your entire home? Do you start decluttering/organizing projects but get overwhelmed and feel defeated? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you're not alone. For many who are chronically disorganized, it becomes a lifelong struggle so it's helpful to work with an organizer to create order and learn how to maintain order long after the organizer leaves. As you declutter, you'll see the extra space in your closet, cabinet, office, or garage, and you'll feel great being in that space. Once you see the life-changing results, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.
Your home is a real estate that comes at a premium. If it feels more like a storage unit rather than a comfortable home, it's time to declutter and organize. Just like calling any other expert (an electrician, a plumber, a roofer, etc.), asking a professional organizer is the way to go. With understanding, guidance, and professional tips, I can help you!
If you need another reason to get organized, then know that you will possibly find treasures you never thought you had or could ever find again. Believe it or not, I have found cash, uncashed checks, gift cards, jewelry, important papers, or even long-lost family heirlooms.
You can always start with a small package to tackle one or two areas and see how you feel about the process. There's absolutely no obligation to purchase more than the initial package. If you feel comfortable, we can keep going with additional hours. If not, then that is absolutely okay too. No pressure at all!

What is my organizer’s main goal?
My goal is to create a positive experience while helping you get organized. Plain & simple!
Most importantly, I'm there to not only work, but to also guide and encourage you through this process.
During our initial consult (in person or by phone), I will get a better understanding of your needs and set up a plan to tackle your specific clutter before our session even begins. This would be a good time to tell me which area is the most important for you to organize first. Once I'm in your home or business office, I'll explain the process for a smooth & productive organizing session. There won't be any judgement and you won't be asked to get rid of your belongings (unless you want to). Together, we can dedicate a few solid hours to create a much-needed functional space that works for you and your family. In the long run, my hope is while you remove the extras in your life and organize the rest, you also eliminate undue stress.

My friends/family members says they'll help me get organized so why do I need to hire a professional organizer?
In the past, clients have shared that family members or close friends have expressed negative feelings regarding hiring an organizer. “Why do you need to spend money on that?” “You shouldn’t be throwing precious memories out.” “I can put your belongings in bins too, and I’ll do it for free!” It’s true that having loved ones assist you in the organization process can be helpful - however, sometimes they can bring with them their own emotional attachments to clutter, which can hinder your decluttering progress. It is always important to work with someone who is not directly associated with your clutter. While it is a nice gesture on their part, there might be feelings of resentment, anger, and frustration while working with someone close to you. Hiring an organizer is just like hiring any other professional with expertise and guidance that you or your family member may not have. Most importantly, it is definitely not just about putting things in bins & pretty baskets. It is a skill set. You don’t feel guilty about going to a mechanic to get your car fixed, so why should you not hire someone to help you with organizing your home or business? In doing so, you will get a new, non-judgmental perspective from an unbiased source, while learning new skills and tips.

How long does it take to get organized?
I work in 4-hr sessions. From experience, this is just the right amount of time to dedicate to decluttering and organizing in a single day. For some clients, in order to avoid physical and mental fatigue, it is necessary to limit our time. How much we get done during that time, depends on how big of a space we’re organizing, how cluttered that space is, and how quickly decisions are made. Each client and their space is different. For example, a closet may take approx. 4-8 hrs, and a garage 8-12 hrs. Just know that I work efficiently, and if I ever complete a job in less hours than the purchased package, I can move on to other cluttered areas, which means that I will always work the full purchased packaged hours.

Do I have to be involved in the process?
You decide. For example, if your goal is to just organize your closet, then I can work alone; however, if you need to declutter first & organize second, then we should work together or you should at least be available to answer questions in regards to your possessions. Ultimately, your items belong to you and you are the decision maker in what leaves and what stays, so your input is invaluable. Having said that, I have done many jobs, without the client present, where I declutter and sort everything first & let the client make decisions at their leisure. I call it "homework". I can then come back and organize the remaining items or give ideas on how you can best organize those items.

Should I sell or donate my unwanted items?
If you wish to sell some of your items, you can list your items online, have a garage/estate sale, or take to consignment shops; however, resell is not part of my services. On the other hand, if you like to donate items in good condition, it will possibly be used by an individual or a family in need, and that's always a win-win for everyone!
